Bueller....Bueller....Bueller.....

It's 11:47 and the child who was so deathly ill this morning that she couldn't possibly be expected to go to school has somehow made a miraculous recovery. The same pathetic little girl who lounged listlessly on the couch as the school bus left without her, whispering requests for juice and Arthur is now up dancing around the livingroom, trying to master the mashed potato. And me? I've got a wicked case of deja vu. It's like Junior Kindergarten, all over again.

Diva Girl used to routinely be "too sick to go to school" in JK, only to undergo a miraculous recovery as soon as she was safely ensconced at Grandma's house and no longer in danger of being forced to endure the horrors of finger painting and circle time. While playing sick is a time honoured school tradition, most kids don't usually start perfecting their technique in Kindergarten. Diva Girl? Well, let's just say she's the only kid I have ever met who could successfully out Ferris Ferris Bueller, and before her fourth birthday no less.

She hasn't done it in years though--not since the time I didn't believe her when she told me her tummy felt yucky and sent her to school, only to have her barf all over the hallway outside her classroom. Bit of a Boy who Cried Wolf in action moment, that. But anyway, since she left the stresses of JK (which were actually legitimate) behind, Diva Girl has been a model student. I wouldn't say her attendance is perfect--she does on occasion get sick--but when she plays hooky, it's at my discretion, not hers. So, I'm a little surprised to find that Diva Girl's tummy ache was apparently a severe case of the 24 minute flu. I'd thought we were beyond this particular ploy.

I'm also a bit curious as to what has sparked this sudden return to a time honoured classic. Last time, it was issued with her teacher and adjusting to the whole school experience that was causing her Buelleritis. She likes her teachers at the new school, however, and despite a few playground skirmishes, seems to be developing friendships with many of the girls in her class. She doesn't have any tests or unfinished homework, so that's not it either. All things considered, I'm not inclined to point the finger at school as the cause of her malaise today.

In fact, I'm betting Hairspray , which came out yesterday on DVD, (and which we immediately bought) as the culprit this time around. So, yeah, I got played, but I think Ferris had it right--everybody needs to take some time out to stop and smell the roses (or dance to the 60s) every now and then. Sure, school's important and all but sometimes so is dancing around your livingroom on a rainy Wednesday.

Plus, she's not sick, and that right there is enough to make me happy with the way today is shaping up.
