Laurie’s Reel Thing Chick Flick Review: Why Did I Get Married?
Don’t you just love the title of this movie? I also loved the actual movie too, as would, I'd bet, any woman who is, was, or wants to be in a committed relationship. Of course, the fact that I am writing this entry after engaging in a “heated discussion” about The Hubby’s purchase of a plant (just goes to show, you don’t have to be a newlywed to get into these ridiculous verbal sparring matches) in no way influences my opinion that this is a classic example of a fab chick flick—for any woman.
That's why I was taken aback that some people were surprised that I'd see a Tyler Perry film. I mean, what's up with that? Yes, 95% of the cast is African-American—so? Its themes are totally universal and will resonant with anyone with an X chromosome, whether black, white, green, or purple. (And hey, if she can get her guy to come along, too, she’s a better woman than me.)
The premise grabs from the get-go: four married African-American couples meet up for their annual vacation, this time at a snowed in log cabin-style house in Colorado. Add in an extra girlfriend who turns out to be sleeping with one of the husbands, a couple still reeling from a family tragedy, another coping with a she-makes-way-more-than-him scenario, and yet another grappling with whether to start a family (he wants to, she doesn’t), and you get a close-up look at what makes some couples tick and others explode. Everyone has a secret, and they all unfold over the course of the film.
Jill Scott gives a heartbreaking performance as a plus-sized woman whose husband’s treatment of her makes you want to throw pointy-toed stilettos at him, and Tasha Smith is positively hysterical as the wife who is footing the bill for her slacker hubby. I still don’t see Janet Jackson as a brainy psychologist, but she was better in the role than I anticipated.
If this is still in your neck of the woods, grab some gal pals and go see it. If you missed it, it’ll make a great Ladies Night In on some cold winter’s evening.
Anyone else see it? Whaddya think?

YES...had my husband with me, and we went on a rare date night. We both enjoyed it, and it created some good opportunity for dialogue, but wasn't really a great movie. The stories were too contrived, and had very little finesse. I did enjoy it, and would recommend seeing it. Very funny in parts, and very touching in others!
Kudos to your hubby, jmzemom, for being open to all kinds of flicks. I agree with you: the movie was hardly "fine cinema" but it was entertaining and even better, great fodder for some dialogue. Thanks for reading. Cheers, Laurie
