Check It Out!
You know what one of the absolute coolest thing about writing Sanity and the Solo Mom has been? I mean besides meeting Kate and Jenny, and Mav, and Kira, and Jen, and you, and you, and you.....And aside from going to BlogHer, which was just lifealteringly awesome. And aside from that big box of books from Scholastic, which was my Christmas and my birthday and every good thing all rolled into one....And can't forget the opportunity to talk to literally thousands of people and know that they cared about me like one of their favourite soap opera characters or possibly the heroine in some sort of interactive novel. That's been pretty cool too. But I have to say, I get a special thrill when writers track me down and ask me to review their books.
This first happened last year, when Rachel Sarah asked me to review her dating memoir, Single Mom Seeking. I can't describe how thrilled I was that a real writer thought that I was important enough that she wanted me to review her book. I know that she sent it out lots of places, and people far more powerful and influential than I am were also asked to help promote it, but the fact that Rachel thought that I was worthy of being included on the list, that my voice mattered...Well, it was a huge ego rush. (With the added benefit that even though we didn't exactly see eye to eye on all the single mom issues, I got to be sort of friends with Rachel, who is incredibly cool.)
Earlier this week Emily Listfield, Redbook's Sex and the Single Mom blogger, messaged me on Facebook and asked if I was Kimberly from Sanity and the Solo Mom. When I confessed that I was indeed that woman, she asked if I'd be interested in reviewing her novel, Waiting To Surface.
Squee.
*ahem*
I was slightly more professional than that with Emily, but the end result is that she's sending me a copy of the book, which is based on her own experiences as she struggled to come to terms with single motherhood in the year after her husband disappeared. I'm very excited about this, and not just because I'm again deeply flattered to be included in this virtual book tour. Anyone who is a single mom knows that quite often the way we're depicted in modern fiction is way off base. So I'm looking forward to reading a book about a single mom by a single mom; if anyone can get it right, it should be her.
You'll have to go to Parenting Without A License to read the review, since tomorrow's my last day here and i haven't received the book yet, but I expect it will be worth your while to check it out, and then check out Emily's book.
Oh! Another thing to check out if you haven't already? Work it, Mom! No, seriously. It's a great site--and not just because they let me write for them. Plus, they're kinda having a contest where every time one of you joins the site they'll give me an entry into a virtual draw to win an amazon gift certificate. Christmas is coming, and I still have Diva Girl's birthday present to buy, so help a mama out, eh? Make sure to tell them that I sent you!
