To PTA or Not to PTA update...

If you haven't read my last posting about my trials and tribulations in the elementary school PTA - you'll need to read it first - click here - because this entry won't be nearly as funny until you read that one!

So here is the update...After the whole advertising debacle, this was the PTA President's email to me:

PTA President: "Sorry for the Monkey wrench on the ads.  I see your true entrepreneurial spirit is in there and hate to dash it, perhaps you would consider getting involved in pasta night next year -maybe a journal would be a nice touch!!  Thanks again for taking this task on!!"

Yes, I too had to re-read it a few times for it to sink in. That 2 line email has many ridiculous statements in it.
Let's discuss the 'journal' idea for next year. WHY is that any different than selling ad space in the newsletter?! and 2) what - get involved in Pasta Night next year! - um...NO-Piranha... NO! This is what gives PTAs a bad wrap. They just suck you in and make you regret volunteering.

Continue on reading to see the next few correspondence's between the two of us....

Me: "Just for my own understanding (sorry to be a pain) but why would a journal distributed at pasta night with ads be different than a newsletter distributed with ads. Just purely curious."

PTA President: "The difference between doing an advertising journal and putting ads in the school newsletter is that the journal would be purely an advertising piece, in the sense that its sole purpose for creation would be to advertise their products, any and all would be invited to participate in the journal excluding no one from the opportunity to get ad space.  The newsletter is specifically a publication produced for the school with pta funds and therefore a product of the school. Any advertisement in the school newspaper would assume endorsement. The other component and probably more important is that if we put advertisements in the newsletter we are using the children to solicit and there have been some interesting legal suits surrounding this kind of situation and we have been cautioned strongly against doing it this way."

WHAT?!  Well, I'm done bashing the PTA, but I am really still confused - however, I've promised my husband (and now I'm promising you) I will get past it. Too much energy has now been exerted at this point. Bigger fish to fry - we've got the Spring issue of Hybrid Mom to deal with!

Many thanks for listening :-)

Oh goodness! Reading this makes me dread the day my little one goes to school... and she's only 7 months old! Wouldn't a drama-free world be lovely?
Good luck! Kelly
