Eighteen is Enough?

From the Brady Bunch to Eight is Enough to Step by Step, it used to be
that a big family, combined with just the right amount of drama and love, was
the perfect equation for a successful sitcom. Now, reality T.V. families are
taking their place, in an even more supersized way.

According to CNN.com, the Duggars
(from the Discovery
Health T.V. series) are expecting their 18th
child. The other children range in age from 20 years old to nine months and
are apparently as well-tempered, if not more so, than the Von Trapp kids. According
to the family’s Web site,
every Duggar child learns to play both violin and piano and the family
organizes their household chores by assigning "jurisdictions," so
everyone knows exactly what their daily responsibilities are.

On the other side of the
behavior spectrum are the eight kids of TLC’s John
and Kate Plus 8. With two-year-old sextuplets and six-year-old twins, each
episode displays a new bout of sibling
squabbles and tantrums.

In your opinion, what is
the perfect-size brood? How much does your own birth order play into
your opinion? Which reality T.V. family sounds more like your own?

Is it OK to Lie to Your Kid About Adoption?

According
to a recent

to children about their adoption can cause depression, anxiety, or relationship

levels of distrust, this connection seems plausible. However, the

Mother's Day Gifts Gone Wild

Mother's Day is fast approaching and this year, I'm begging my husband for the ultimate gift and it doesn't cost a thing: time. Time with my family. Not even time alone. I just want him to pack a picnic lunch and go to the park with our daughter and play and have fun. I say this not to be melodramatic nor because I'm trying to be one of those self sacrificing, "super moms". I say this because I've just given up on getting any really decent gifts for Mother's Day. Let's just say that over the five short years I've been a mom, I've received some of the most horrible gifts on Mother's Day. See below:

My father actually thought this was a cute idea. Because I like gardening so much why wouldn't I appreciate a garden gnome that flashes my neighbors?? The kids think it's a riot. Over the years they've written various things on the tush like: blow me; suck it; go ahead I'm easy. Delightful. Just what I want in my front garden. We live in the city garden gnomes just don't work here. Finally, over the winter break this year, somebody smashed it. Aaawww. What a shame. Not.

Laurie's Reel Thing Chick Flick Review: Then She Found Me

Lots of terrific chick flick fare out there just now. The
other day my sister and I caught a showing of “Then She Found Me.” Helen Hunt,
as an appealingly neurotic, adopted 30-something and Bette Midler, as the
over-the-top, suffocating birth mom who inserts herself into her now grown
daughter’s life, both give tremendous performances. (And Colin Firth, is always
adorable…love that accent!)

Yes, it’s quick and witty, but overall, a really poignant look at the tricky mother-daughter thing (yes, dear reader, I cried). It’ll certainly get you thinking about your
relationship with your own mother and/or daughter. I know it did for me. And
seeing it with one—or both—of them might be a perfect pre-Mother’s Day outing; that it will spark some interesting conversation is a sure thing.

Are Parents Really Harder on Their Firstborn Children?

Maybe being born first isn't all it's cracked up to be, after all. According to a new study from Johns Hopkins University, parents are frequently much harder on their eldest child than they are on their other kids. The study found that firstborns who drop out of school are 20 percent less likely to receive most of their income from their parents than younger siblings in the same situation. Additionally, firstborn daughters who get pregnant as teenagers are 30 percent less likely to receive significant financial support from their parents than younger female siblings in the same situation.

The researchers believe that parents punish firstborns more severely as a means of setting an example for their younger children. But the study also found that this might not be all bad news. Firstborns are typically more reliable and conscientious, because for most of their lives they have been held to a higher standard than their younger brothers and sisters.

What do you think? Do you agree with the study's findings? Were they true in your household when you were growing up? What about now? Are you harder on your eldest child? Is your firstborn more responsible?
Laurie’s Reel Thing Chick Flick Review: Baby Mama

Okay, let’s cut to the chase. I loved, loved, LOVED this
movie. It's one of those flicks that are funny for the long haul and not just the coming attractions. My friend Helene and I laughed out loud from the opening
scenes to the final credits. Not to give too much away, it’s the tale of Kate
(Tina Fey), a wildly successful 30-something businesswoman who finds herself
wildly unsuccessful at getting pregnant. So this uptight, upper-middle class go-getter goes out and gets herself a surrogate—the irrepressible Amy Poehler as
the wacky, other-side-of-the-tracks Angie, who "discontinued high school"—to carry her precious progeny for her.

The dialogue is fast, witty, and right on target, and the
cast is superb. Not only do the two female leads shine, hysterical performances
are given by Steve Martin as Kate’s New Agey, long gray pony-tailed post-hippie
boss, Barry (his reward for a job well done is an uninterrupted five minutes of
eye contact with his lucky minion), Romany Malco as Oscar the doorman (“You got
yourself some baby mama drama,” he announces to Kate when Angie shows up on her
doorstep to move in), and Sigourney Weaver as the icky Chaffee Bicknell, owner
of the la di da surrogacy agency. Plus, Greg Kinnear is downright adorable as
Kate’s love interest, Rob, the lawyer-turned-juice-bar-owner.

The movie skewers the whole contemporary pushy urban parenting scene (only strollers with air bags will do for strolls to the park) to delightful effect. Looking for lots of laughs and a fresh take on 21st century baby mama-hood? Get thee to the multi-plex, pronto!

Parents are all crazy

I have a 6 year old son who is on a travel hockey team. (yes, travel ice hockey - i do realize this is ridiculous) Anyhow, this time of year they have try-outs for next season. The hockey career of our son is basically my husbands responsibility. The 3 times a week practices and the one game a week or weekend tournaments are all his work. Of course my 3 year old daughter and I go to the tournaments and some games, but the drudgery of the practices - changing in and out of the equipment etc, are all his deal.

Anyhow, tonight we go to the try-outs. It's a 3 night long event and this was the 3rd night. There are approximately 40 kids trying out for 3 teams. Mostly all the children make a team, it simply depends on whether it's an A-B-or C team.

So I'm in the stands watching my son and internally beaming with pride. He is really good - come on - he's six! The other parents' pride and passion, NOT so internal.

'Shoot the puck'

'Jason, what are you doing?!'

'Take the body'

'Pass it'

'Go - Go - Go Eric, SKATE!'

I don't understand this. First off, it's a try-out - NOT a game. and secondly, my goodness, they are 6, 7, and 8 year old children on the ice. Let them play and have fun.

So this was not the only disturbing situation of the evening...

There’s no Mother’s Day Without a Momtourage

You could say I’ve constructed the last decade of my life via the Internet. After all, it’s how I make a living, it allows me to keep bonds growing with friends near and far and it’s how I met my husband, which led to having children.

<?xml:namespace prefix = o />Ruby-lipped, hair shining, screaming “David pinched me,” and “Rafael’s copying me,” my two little boys want what I want: food, play and the sleep of dreams. And like them, I need to know that despite my mistakes, “I’m still good”—especially at the hardest job I will ever do—the work of mothering.

Yes, there is a Mother’s Day to salute and celebrate moms for their nurturing service to humanity, but like all holidays, it’s just a marker, a token day of thanks. After the breakfast in bed, the bouquet of flowers and the box decorated with bright green noodles have been given, it’s back to setting the alarm clock for another day. When I read in a New York Times article on couples’ counseling last year that one wife felt having kids had turned her into a drudge, I laughed out loud—partly in recognition and fear too that I was becoming her.

Drudge-Buster

There is some drudgery in parenting, let’s face it. But support from other moms can make it feel a lot less lonely. For me, and I suspect for a lot of iVillagers, that support is found on the Internet, at the end of a hard day when the house is finally quiet, in the email message or post that says, “you’re doing fine, in fact, you’re doing great.”

Keeping the balance between who you are as a mother and a person isn’t easy, and it cannot be done without a “momtourage.” These are the people in your life who support you day-to-day. It might include your partner, mother in law, babysitter, cleaning person or the friend, often also a mother, who tells you you’re not crazy, and in fact has her own story to tell.
